TikTok Calls It “Alpine Divorce.” Family Law Courts Call It Something Else.

A recent article from The Guardian highlights the latest viral trend: the “alpine divorce.”

One partner leaves the other behind on a hike. Social media treats it like an emerging phenomenon. Relationship experts treats it like a red flag.

Courts don’t care about the label.

What matters is the behavior.

In washington family law cases, we look at patterns: judgment, communication, and whether someone can consistently prioritize another person’s safety and needs. Walking ahead on a trail isn’t the issue. But leaving someone vulnerable, ignoring their limits, or failing to communicate and work together—those facts can matter when decision-making, parenting ability, or credibility are at issue.

There are two sides to every story. Whether you felt abandoned or have been accused of being the one who “left,” outcomes don’t turn on viral labels. They turn on context, evidence, and how the narrative is framed.
